Abstract
596,310. Thermionic valves; sawtooth generating circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and ROGERS, D. C. Jan. 23, 1945, No. 1797. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A thermionic valve comprises two pentode valve sections having separate unequal anodes 6, 7, Fig. 1, but the control grid 3, screen grid 4 and suppressor grid 5 being common to the two sections and interposed between the cathode 2 and the anodes 6, 7 and the electron collecting areas of the anodes 6, 7 are so proportioned that the anode currents and mutual conductances of the two sections are in a specified constant ratio while the control grid potential is varied over a specified range. Preferably, the currents collected by the anodes 7, 6 are in the ratio of 10 : 1 respectively. The cathode 2 may be in the form of a hollow metal cylinder containing a heater and is then surrounded by cylindrical wire-wound grids 3, 4, 5 and by a hollow anode cylinder which is divided into two unequal parts by a cut transverse to the axis, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), an annular metal screen 8 being interposed between the two anode parts 6, 7 and electrically connected to the cathode 2. A " diode anode " 9 may be placed near the cathode 2 and connected to the suppressor grid 5. The valve may be used in a circuit for generating saw-tooth waves, as shown ; the circuit does not oscillate spontaneously, but has to be triggered by applying pulses of rectangular waveform between the terminals 18, 20. The current in the circuit connected to the smaller anode 6 is consequently of saw-tooth waveform and an amplified copy of this waveform is produced in the circuit connected to the larger anode 7, and may be applied to the deflecting coils 16 of a cathode-ray tube through an output transformer 15.
