[Class 83 (iv)] In a semi-automatic metallic arc welding machine, the electrode wire is mechanically fed and guided to the arc from a reel by three parts through which the wire passes in succession, the first of which exerts an unwinding action on the wire coiled on the reel and directs it towards the second part which feeds it through the third part in synchronism with the first part, the third part being held in the operator's hand and merely serving for guiding the wire. The second part is preferably balanced. Electrode wires of large diameter, e.g. 4 mms., may thus be used without causing reaction on the operator's hand. The electrode wire reel 5 is mounted in a casing adjustable on a pivot 4 carried by a vertically adjustable post 3 on a carriage 2. Mounted on a pivot 19 is the motordriven mechanism 7 for drawing the wire 6 from the reel, the mechanism 7 being connected by a bracket 8 through an arm 11 to the second driving part 9, which carries a flexible tube 14 and current conducting nozzle 18 through which it feeds the wire to the arc, the nozzle being provided with handles 16 and 17 provided with a push-button. The mechanism 9 is driven from 7 by a flexible cable 10. The arm 11 which is pivoted at 12 to the bracket 8 and is held in contact therewith by a spring 13, is connected to the part 9 by a ball-and-socket joint 20. The system as a whole is balanced about the pivot 19 by springs between the reel and the part 7. In a modification, the reel and first feed mechanism are mounted in a balanced reel sheath 22 on the carriage 21, the sheath extending in the form of a rigid tube 29 followed by a hose 24 connected to the second feed part 9 which carries the hose 14 and nozzle.
