Abstract

595,639. Rotary pumps. STEVENS, A. H. (Henry & Wright Manufacturing Co.). March 29, 1945, No. 7990. [Class 110 (ii)] The stator wall of a rotary apparatus, such as a pump, of the outwardly sliding vane type, is of cardioid form except for the portion adjacent the retrogression point, which is cut away between the points on the cardioid having a common tangent to provide a longitudinal arcuate recess. The latter is engaged by the rotor, which is of cylindrical form with its axis coincident with the retrogression point. The diametrical vane 12 is slidably received within a slot 11 in the rotor 8 and comprises a tenon 15 which is journalled in a bearing 17 carried by a driving plate 18. A counterweight 18' is provided. A scraper 22, which may be of ebonite, is carried in a groove 21 at each end of the vane 12, its movement being limited by pins 23 engaging slots 24. The transverse edges of the vane 12 may be packed by strips of greased felt engaged in grooves therein or by grooves of suitable sections and positions. The pump may be rendered non-operative without stopping it by means of rotary distributer valves 27, 28 which can be turned by a lever 30 and connecting rod 29 to positions in which the suction and discharge connections 2<1>, 3<1> are placed in communication with each other through a byepass 26<1>, the suction and discharge ports 2, 3 being at the same time placed in communication through orifices 31, 32 and a cavity 26 with the open air. A relief valve 34 communicates with the discharge connection 3<1>. The stub shaft 25 of the rotor 8 has helical grooves 25<1> on its surface which delivery lubricant through conduits (not shown) to places to be lubricated. The lubricant is fed from a reservoir 36 by a wick 35. The vane 12 may be guided at the end remote from the tenon 15 by a further tenon engaging an annular slot in the wall of the cover-plate 6. The rotor 8 may be positively driven by gearing between the drive shaft 19 and the shaft 25. The machine may be used for colloidal liquids where foaming must be avoided. Whenused for such liquids or for crude oil or for gases carrying dusts or powdered mineral matter, the scrapers may be omitted and a slight clearance provided between the moving parts. The Specification includes a discussion on the optimum proportions for the moving parts.
