595,473. Screw-and-nut gearing. BESWICK, R. E. May 11, 1945, No. 11901. [Class 80(iii)] [Also in Group XXV] A quick release nut has a number of segments 13, Fig. 2, each formed with a conical portion 10, that co-acts with a corresponding portion 19 in the housing to close the segments on the bolt, and a polygonal portion 12 that engages a corresponding part 18 in the housing to transmit torque. A spring ring 17 tends to expand the segments and a spring ring 21 in the housing engages notches 14 in the segments tending to retain them in the closed position. Pins 22 engaging between the segments assist in guiding them and engage the ring 17 to prevent complete separation. In a modification, two sets of polygonal surfaces 28a, 28b, Fig. 4, are provided with an intermediate conical surface 29a on the housing, and the segments have two sets of conical and two of polygonal surfaces. Spring detent pins 31 replace the ring 21. In a further form of segment having only one central conical portion slight projections are formed that tend to retain the housing in the closed position.
