Abstract
The adhesion of ice to the surfaces of common solid materials such as metal, stone and particularly rubber, normally subjected to icing conditions, is reduced by associating with at least the surface of said material an organo-silicon halide or a liquid polymeric silicone. The halide may be applied as a solution in a volatile solvent such as a hydrocarbon or a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon, e.g., a 50 per cent. by weight solution of dimethyl silicon dichloride in benzene is brushed on to the surface of a rubber inflatable de-icing device such as is fitted to aircraft wings, and the solvent allowed to evaporate. The polymeric silicone may be prepared by the hydrolysis of a mixture of dimethyl silicon dichloride and monomethyl silicon trichloride and subsequent polymerisation to the liquid stage, e.g., a liquid polymeric silicone having an initial boiling point of about 165 DEG C. and prepared from these substances is applied directly to the surface of vulcanised neoprene inflatable elements of a deicing device. Specification 542,655, [Group IV], and U.S.A. Specification 2,380,995 are referred to.
