594,867. Sorting fruit or vegetables. McFARLANE, J. B: July 3, 1945, No. 16889. [Class 117] Apparatus for sorting tomatoes or other fruits or vegetables comprises a box 10 divided by partitions 16 into compartments 15, a false floor of each compartment sloping towards one side, the top of the box being provided with divergent rails 21, each of which supports an endless band 31 mounted on a pair of pulleys 26, 30. The pulleys 26 are fixed on a shaft 25 which may be rotated manually or by power means, for example an electric motor. Each compartment has an opening 18 normally closed by a pivoted shutter 19 which is held in the closed position by a weight 19a or by spring means. The shutter may be held open by means of an arm 19b thereon when engaged by a basket on a shelf 20 on the shutter.. The endless bands may be each of T-section as shown, with the supporting rail 21 correspondingly recessed. Alternatively, they may be each of triangular or rectangular section. Instead of separate pairs of pulleys for each guide rail, each of the shafts 25, 29 may be provided with a cylindrical drum wrapped by the conveyer bands. For fruit or vegetables of substantially ovoid shape, the feed shoot 22 may be provided with fingers to present the produce in the proper position.
