Abstract

594,577. Ordnance. BURNEY, SIR C. D. Sept. 4, 1943, No. 14463. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to non-recoil guns of the kind described in Specification 586,749 and having lateral gas chambers 5 connected to rearwardly discharging gas nozzles 13 on each side of the breech opening b as described in Specification 590,272. According to the present invention, the propellent charge p is divided and loaded into the lateral chambers separately from the projectile 4 which is loaded centrally. As shown in Fig. 3, the breech structure comprises a central compartment 3 to receive the gun barrel 1, and parallel lateral compartments 5 to the rear end of which the nozzles 13 are fitted, the front ends having openings closed by hinged breech blocks 6 through which the charges p are loaded rearwardly. The gas chamber is provided by a transverse bore 9 closed by plugs 11. The front end of each nozzle is provided with a grid 14 and a variable replaceable throat piece 16. A central removable tube 17 with a rear expansion nozzle 19 and a replaceable throat piece 18 provide readily accessible means for finely adjusting the throat area of the nozzles. Power means for ramming the projectile from a loading tray is provided by a ram cylinder 24, Fig. 2, the piston of which is connected to a cross-head carrying a pair of pulleys 27, 28, Fig. 4. A cable arranged as in Fig. 4 is anchored at each end 32, 33 and passes round the pulleys 27, 28 and also round pulleys 29, 30 on the fixed rammer structure. The ramming head 21 is connected to a slide 23 to which the cable is attached. With the arrangement shown, the rammer head moves four times as fast as the power piston. The charges are fired electrically by circuits, Fig. 5, which can only be completed when all the breech blocks (i, 15 are closed. The firing and testing circuits include a battery 35, firing switch 36 and charge igniters IC<1>, IC<2>. The testing circuits include resistance relays RC<1>, RC<2> in parallel which prevent the passage of full current to the igniters until switches A<1>, A<2> are closed by the relays tu energize a contactor C operating switches AC, I<1>, I<2> that enable the firing current to byepass the resistance relays. Specifications 590,269 and 590,271 also are referred to.
