Abstract

Dimethyldihalogenosilanes are hydrolysed by gently flowing them on the surface of a gently swirling hydrolysis medium consisting of an aqueous solution of a salt of metal from the first or second group of the periodic table. The product is a dimethylsilicone containing a higher proportion of high molecular weight polymers than usual. Suitable salts are sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate, calcium nitrate, zinc chloride, copper sulphate, potassium carbonate and magnesium sulphate. The hydrolysis medium should have a specific gravity of at least 1.1. The solution may be gently swirled by means of a propeller sunk deeply therein. In the example, sodium carbonate is used for the hydrolysis and the addition of the dimethyldichlorosilane is stopped when the solution becomes acid. The products are particularly suitable for the preparation of elastomers by the methods described in Specifications 592,018 and 594,481.
