[Class 112] [Also in Groups XIV, XVII and XXV] A knot-tying device, particularly for tying thrum-knots for the carrying loops of parcels, comprises a bill provided with cutting and holding means and formed in two, or preferably three, parts, one of which is rigid with a base while the other, or each of the others, is movable and bears against the fixed part. In the arrangement shown a part 2 of the bill, semi-circular in section, is rigid with a base 23 adapted for clamping to a table, and two parts 3, quadrantal in section, are pivoted to the base on a common hinge-pin 7 and urged against the part 2 by spring-pressed balls 8; one of the parts 3 has a roughened surface to hold the string ends against a corresponding surface on the part 1, and the other carries an adjustable cutter blade 12 which enters a groove in the part 2. The base 23 has fixed to it a stud 19 which has at its lower end an arm 34, carrying a string receptacle 35, and an arm 29 carrying half of a wire basket for holding a parcel, the other half of the basket being; carried by an arm 30 pivoted on the stud 19 and spring-pressed to grip the parcel. The string- holder 35 has a spring-wire friction device 39 engaging the string. The knot is formed by looping the string round the bill as shown, drawing the ends down so that they are cut and held, and then stripping the loop off over the ends. The apparatus may be used simply as a string cutter and holder.
