[Class 112] In a hand-carried knotter, Fig. 8, for use in parcelling a string-holder 11, string-end holder and cutter 18, 21 and a mandrel 24 are carried on one member 8 of a pair of tongs together with a cylinder 13 having a threaded orifice to accommodate the quick-threaded shank of a helical-ended needle 15. The end of the shank of the needle 15 is revolubly mounted in a cylinder 16 which slides upon the cylinder 13 and is controlled by a pin-andslot connection with a second member 7 of the tongs. In operation, the string is passed by hand over the guide 18, through a notch 19 on the cylinder 13, around a parcel 25 and over the end of the mandrel 24. The tongs are then closed and the needle is moved into the position shown so that the string near the clamp 21 is gripped by the bifurcated end of the needle. At the same time the string is cut and held at 21. The tongs are then opened by a spring 17 and the string drawn back by the needle, producing with the thread loop 4a a wearer's type of knot. The knot can be tightened by pulling on the end 4a so long as the loop of the string remains around the mandrel 24. The mandrel is pivoted upon the member 8 and moves towards the parcel as the knot is tightened and the parts are proportioned to permit the knot to leave the mandrel at the appropriate moment. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a table-mounted knotter, Fig. 14 (Cancelled), in which a rotating bill 33 of a usual type co-operates with a string clamp 31 and a pivoted string guide 38 to form a knot of the weaver's knot type. The string eye in the guide 38 has in it a pivoted cam which enables the guide, in its backward movement, to grip the string and so tighten the knot. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
