Abstract
474,161. Knot-tying devices. HIGGINS, F. W., and GOLDSMITH, W. H. April 30, 1936, No. 12339. Convention date, May 10, 1935. [Class 112] In a hand-carried knotter tying weavers' knots, both thrum ends are cut between the knot and the bill after the knot has been tightened. The knot may be tightened against a post which determines the position of the knot and permits cutting the thrum ends closer to the knot. As applied to the knotter described in Specification 394,220, a post 65, Figs. 8 and 9, which is fixed to the knotter frame 13, is positioned between the bill and the thread clips on the swinging arm 36. It is provided with a shoulder b to detain the thread wand a curved forward edge to guide the thread x. Scissors 70, 71 are mounted on a plate, not shown, which is moved forward by a cam on the operating quadrant. The moving blade has a pin-and-slot connection with the frame 13 which causes the scissors to close and cut the threads as it is moved forward. The knotting bill is positively stopped, in the position shown in Fig. 9, by the engagement of a stop on the quadrant with a shoulder 80, Fig. 6, on the bill shaft. Subsequent forward movement of the quadrant carries the bill shaft forward in unison with the cutters. In this movement, a spring is compressed by a collar 85 and subsequently returns the bill shaft to its normal position where it is held by a latch. In order to facilitate the disengagement of the thread loop from the bill during the tightening of the knot the movable member is bevelled as shown at c, Fig. 8, and a fixed cam surface 86 is placed with its forward edge slightly forward of the corner d. Alternatively, the movable member is provided with a curved cam heel 87, Fig. 11. The finger piece of the knotter referred to may be adjustably hinged to the quadrant and an additional wing piece 64 is provided for guiding the thread into the forward slots. The knot-positioning post and the thread cutters 70, 71 are also described as applied to the knotters of the same general kind as those described in Specifications 279,195, [Class 112], and 423,422.
