[Class 106 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a system in which a step-by-step counter can be driven by electric impulses in either direction, the impulse-sending handle is geared to the planet-wheels 5 of a differential gear, the sun-wheels 6, 7 of which drive respectively the impulse senders for the two directions and the counter is similarly associated via a differential gear with ratchet-wheels 47, 48 which are stepped in opposite directions by magnets 39, 40. When one impulse-sender is actuated, the other is locked by a detent 18, 30. Each impulse-sender comprises a contact-operating shaft 16 driven by springs such as 13 and controlled by a governor such as 22. The shaft is normally locked by engagement of an arm, e.g. 14, 15, thereon with an escapement member, e.g. 12. When the sending handle is turned, the spring 13 is wound up and the escapement member is rotated to allow the shaft 16 to rotate 180 degrees at a time. The transmission circuit may be modified as shown in Fig. 2 in which separate A.C. sources are provided for each magnet or as shown in Fig. 3, in which the stepping magnets are polarized by rectifiers or otherwise and + andimpulses are used.
