Abstract

Moulded fibrous products, e.g., porous, thick-walled articles for electrical, acoustic, or thermal insulation, are made from a suspension containing cellulosic fibres which have been made water-repellent by treatment with an organohalogenosilane, e.g., methylchlorosilane of 1 to 3 methyl groups per silicon atom. Examples specify a mixture of dimethyldichloro- and methyltrichlorosilane, and a mixture of glass fibres and kraft fibres, deposited under 27 ins. (mercury) vacuum, on a perforated form. Azeotropic mixtures of silicon halides as disclosed in Specification 575,696, [Group VIII], may be used, and the fibres may be treated in sheet form or disintegrated. The pulp, which may include asbestos fibres, glass fibres 0.05 ins. long, and resinous materials, is beaten, formed, and dried as by pressing and passing hot gas through the material. The products may be impregnated with up to 60 per cent. of phenolic, alkyd, or organopolysiloxane resins or with mineral or vegetable oils &c. Specifications 547,606 and 572,740 also are referred to.
