Abstract

593,550. Electric control systems. WOOLNOUGH, G. L., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 4, 1945, No. 14049. [Class 40 (i)] In a receiver for a remote control system of the type in which the response depends on the interval between two impulses, the reception of a first impulse causes a member driving a member actuating the means to be controlled to be released, and the reception of a second impulse causes the actuating member to actuate the means to be controlled. Figs. 1 and 3 show an arrangement in which a switch 50 is operated in response to a pair of relatively high-frequency impulses transmitted over power lines, and separated by a predetermined time interval. Motor 4 is suitably connected in series with resonance relay 2 'to the power lines and exerts a continuous torque on a shaft 6 which carries a fixedly mounted ,member 9, which is normally prevented from rotating by the engagement of a bimetallic element 18 in a recess 17 and a loosely mounted member 13. Members 9 and 13 are configured so that they tend to rotate together, but if 13 is stopped, the torque on 9 causes 13 to move axially, the relative rotary movement being limited by the engagement of a pin 22 in a slot 23. When a signal of suitable frequency is superimposed, the normally closed contacts of relay 2 open intermittently and current flows through coil 20 causing element 18 to move out of engagement with the member 9 and into engagement with slot 21 on member 13 owing to the greater length of slot 21. The element 18 does not move back into slot 17 on termination of the impulse, but rides along the periphery of member 9 as the system is rotated by the motor 4. Reception of the second impulse causes the element 18 to engage one of slots 24-32, the above-mentioned axial movement then takes place and if the interval between the impulses is of correct duration, pin 42 is in a suitable angular position to actuate switch 50. If no second impulse occurs, member 9 rotates until the element 18 drops into slot 17. A second pin 421 angularly displaced from 42 is provided so that switch 50 may be actuated the other way by two impulses separated by a different time interval. The left-hand face of member 13 is configured to take a number of pins for actuating different control mechanisms. The element 18 may be replaced by a suitable electromagnetic device, or a relay may be interposed between relay 2 and winding 20. Specifications 517,971 and 523,360, [both in Group XXXVII], are referred to.
