Abstract
Yarns in the form of, e.g. threads, hanks or warp are sized with carbohydrate materials such as starch or carob bean flour by an improved process which comprises preparing the size by mixing the sizing material with water and allowing it to swell therein to some extent, but not completely, sizing the yarn therewith and completing the swelling of the sizing material on the yarn by a heat treatment. Distribution of the size in water is effected at ordinary or raised temperatures and other materials such as gelatine or bone glue may be added to the dispersion. The heat treatment may be effected with or without steaming either prior to or simultaneously with a final drying treatment. The heat treatment may be assisted by the application of chemical reagents to the yarn and they may be applied in their gaseous state, or alternatively they may be admixed with the size and made to exert their action by the subsequent heating operation. In the examples specified, aqueous sizes, prepared at temperatures of from 30 DEG to 65 DEG C., comprise (1) carob bean flour, potato starch, bone glue and turkey red oil; (2) potato starch, senegal gum, tallow and a wetting agent; (5) carob bean flour, potato starch, turkey red oil and potassium persulphate; (6) carob bean flour, potato starch, tallow, sodium - para - toluene sulpho-chloramide and a wetting agent; and the sized yarns are heated in (1) live steam; (3) stagnant air at 110-120 DEG C.; (4) live steam containing ammonia gas. Specifications 144,204, [Class 15 (ii)], and 348,589 are referred to.ALSO:Sizes of carbohydrate material such as carob bean flour or starch are prepared by dispersing the sizing material in water at ordinary or raised temperature not exeeding 70 DEG C. such that complete swelling of the material does not occur. Other materials such as gelatine or bone glue may be added to the dispersion. The size is applied to yarn and subjected thereon to a heat treatment assisted, if desired by the action of chemical agents, to effect completion of swelling (see Group IV). In examples (1)carob bean flour and starch are dispersed in cold water and introduced into an aqueous solution of glue at 30 DEG C. containing turkey red oil. The dispersion is warmed to 35 DEG to 45 DEG C.; (2) potato starch is added to an aqueous solution of senegal gum at 30 DEG C. to which a wetting agent and a tallow-water emulsion have previously been added, and the dispersion is warmed to about 60 DEG C.; (5) the size comprises a dispersion of carob bean flour and potato starch in an aqueous solution of turkey red oil and potassium persulphate and the liquor is warmed to about 60 DEG C.; (6) the size comprises a dispersion of carob bean flour, potato starch, tallow, a wetting agent and sodium para toluene sulphochloramide in water at 60 DEG C.
