Abstract
593,018. Cycle. locks; inflators. OXLEY, H. June 18, 1940, Nos. 10517/40 and 21656/44. [Classes 79 (iii) and 136 (i)] [Also in Groups XXV and XXVII] A combination lock for preventing longitudinal movement, or alternatively for preventing rotational movement of a bolt, rod, spindle or wire, comprises a lock body 1, Fig. 1, a number of operating members 4 encircling the body in axial alignment and rotatable about' a common axis, an element 10 to be locked disposed in a bore 8 along said axis, the surface of this element or of a member 9 secured thereto having annular or longitudinal serrations 12, and a member of locking plungers 5 (one for each operative member) urged radially outwards to disengaging position by springs but positively held .inwards by the operating members, except when the corresponding member is in a predetermined angular position, the inner end of each plunger, when so held, engaging the serrations 12 to lock the member 10 against movement. The member 10 shown may be a wire or the like for operating a cycle brake or the device may be applied to the locking of a cycle steering column. A device is also described in which a plunger to be locked engages one end of a cycle pump, the plunger head having a skirt which, in the locked position, shrouds the screws of a bond-clip by which the device is secured to the cycle frame. In another device the lock is applied to a chain for locking a cycle wheel. In this case one end of the chain is permanently secured to the lock body and the other end carries a pin which can be inserted axially in the lock body and locked therein. As shown in Fig. 3, the locking plunger 5 is held against rotation and then urged outwardly by a wire spring secured by a screw 18, one end of the spring passing through a perforation in the plunger 5 just below a rounded head 7, the other end 19 of the spring being curved and engaging one or other of a number of recesses 20, 21 within the-operating member. The single recess 21 is deeper than the recesses 20 of the series so that when it is in register with the head 7 it allows the plunger to be moved to release position by the spring. The recesses serve in cooperation with the spring to retain the operating member in adjusted position and to allow the setting of the operating members to be effected by feel or counting clicks from a zero position. A modification is described in which a spring strip is used, one end of the strip being bifurcated'to embrace the plunger and engage flats provided thereon. just below the head. In another modification, a coiled spring, is used below the head of the plunger, each operating member having a second shorter plunger, spring loaded outwards, to serve as a substitute-for the curved end 19 of the spring described above. The whole device may be enclosed in a case having a window opening or openings through which indicia on the operating members may. be viewed, and the parts are held together by an end disc 34, spring washer 30 and nut 29. To allow the combination to be altered at will the indicia may be provided on a separate split spring-ring or a continuous ring fitted to the operating member and held in angular position with respect thereto by a projection selectively engaging one of a series of recesses, or by like means, various arrangements being described.
