[Class 131] A hair curler comprises a frame, a resilient cover hinged to the frame, a base plate slidable on the frame, and means for detachably securing the cover and base plate together leaving the frame movable with respect to the base plate (e.g. due to the resiliency of the cover), the arrangement being such that, when the curler is open, there is provided a space through which hair can be inserted in the frame and in the form of a flat curl placed on the base plate, the cover and base plate being moved relatively to close the space and grip the hair at its roots and then being secured together to place the curl under pressure. In one form, Fig. 1, the cover 2 is formed with a lip 4 and is hinged to a wire frame 1 carrying a slidable base plate 5. The cover is slightly convex and is formed with perforations 7 to allow access of air, the plate 5 being formed with similar perforations 8 and a comb 6. After the hair has been inserted, the base plate is moved inwardly to grip the hair while the cover is closed, the plate then being moved outwardly to engage the lip 4 and place the curl under pressure. In a second form, Fig. 2, the comb is replaced by a curved portion 10, and the cover is formed with side portions 12 to prevent the curl slipping out sideways. In a modification, Fig. 7, the cover is locked in the closed position by a U-shaped slidable member 9 adapted to engage the lip 4. The cover and base plate may be made of metal, bone, horn, wood or plastic material and may be ornamented. According to the Provisional Specification, the base plate may consist of a slidable part and a fixed part, or two slidable parts, one adapted to engage the cover and the other formed with a comb.
