Abstract
592,006. Temperature-responsive actuating- elements. DAVIS, N. R., and SUN-VIC CONTROLS, Ltd. Nov. 3,1944. No. 21590. [Class 64 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] In a system (see Group XXXV) for automatically controlling the temperature of an electrically or otherwise heated electrolytic bath or other enclosure the temperature responsive element is an adjustable toluenemercury thermal switch, Fig. 1. A tube 1 containing mercury m and toluene (not shown), and mounted in the enclosure, carries a contact rod 2 secured at its upper end to the centre of a bimetallic strip 3 which is located between supports 5 in a casing attached to the upper end of a tube 10. Tube 10 is a sliding fit in an externally threaded sleeve 11 registered within the top of tube 1 by a rubber brush 12, and is provided with radial pins 13 projecting through slots 13a in sleeve 11. Tube 10 is normally biassed upwardly relative to sleeve 11 by a spring 14 but a nut 17 on the threaded surface of sleeve 11 engages pins 13 and permits adjustment of the position of tube 10 and, hence, the relative position of rod 2 and mercury m for temperature setting. Contact between the rod and mercury, besides controlling the heating of the enclosure, also controls the energisation of a heater 7 for bimetallic strip 3 in such a manner as to cause reciprocation of rod 2. Electrostatic shields between winding 7 and strip 3 are referred to. In Fig. 3, a rectangular bimetallic strip 3a supported at 50, and supporting rod 2 at 2, is employed to avoid the effect of ambient temperature changes.
