Abstract

Twistless yarns are produced from staple fibres by impregnating a sliver with an aqueous dispersion of a synthetic resin in a lower polymer form, which is stable on further polymerization to washing or dry-cleaning, subjecting the sliver to tension to parallelise the fibres, drying, and heating to further polymerize or condense the synthetic resin. Adhesive substances such as starches, gums, dextrine, casein or gelatine may be added to the dispersion. Tinting, dulling, waterproofing, fireproofing or antiseptic agents may also be added. In an example, fibres are first made into a sliver and then passed through a trough containing a mixture of 16 parts by volume of a 46 per cent dispersion of a urea-formaldehyde modified alkyd resin pre-condensate in glycol mono-ethyl ether, 1 part of ammonia (specific gravity 0.910) and 143 parts of water. From the trough the sliver is passed between squeezing rollers, stretched and dried at 180 DEG F., then caused to travel for three minutes through a chamber at 250 DEG F. to effect polymerization. According to the Provisional Specification, natural resin or a mixture of natural and synthetic resins may be used. Specifications 338,381, [Class 120 (iii)], and 512,558 are referred to.
