Abstract
A polyvinyl acetal polarizing sheet is protected against the action of heat and light, and is prevented from shrinking, by treating it with a liquid comprising an organic ester of silicic acid and effecting condensation polymerization of the ester on or within the sheet, volatile products used or formed in the process being removed. The sheet may be formed of polyvinyl butyral, rendered polarizing by stretching and treatment with an iodine compound such as HI. The protective liquid may comprise tetra ethyl orthosilicate and a penetrant such as ethylene dichloride, the latter causing swelling of the sheet and rendering it receptive to the silicate. Alternatively, alcohol may be used as the penetrant. After the sheet has been dipped in the ethyl silicate-ethylene dichloride mixture it is dipped into a 2 per cent solution of HCl in water saturated with ethylene dichloride to cause condensation between the polyvinyl butyral and the silicate. After removal of the excess of reagents by a solvent which does not attack the sheet, the sheet is dried. It may subsequently be heated to increase its stability. Polarizing properties lost during the process may be restored by treating the sheet with an intensifying solution containing propyl alcohol, iodine, and hydriodic acid. Alternatively, ethyl silicate may be added to the intensification solution, impregnation and intensification being carried out simultaneously.
