Abstract

591,378. Making fish-hooks. MELLERIO, L. P. (Shoe Form Co., Inc.). May 5, 1945, No. 11490. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for making fish-hooks has a turret for moving blanks to the operating tools. Straightening.-The wire is fed through a flier 76, Fig. 11, with grooved pins 84 rotated by a belt 92 and oscillated along the wire by links 94, 100 from a shaft 108. Wire feed.-A slide carrying a fixed jaw 26 and a pivoted jaw 24, Fig. 12, is reciprocated by an adjustable crank-pin 105. Rearward movement is prevented by a wire engaging plunger 128 reciprocated from the shaft 108. Shearing.-A disk cutter 28, Fig. 12, is swung about a shaft 138 by a cam on the shaft 108 to sever the wire. The blanks are pushed to a shoot 32 by fingers 148 projected by a rod shaft 150 and fall between guides on a work table 34. Grinding. - The blanks are fed along the work table by fingers 184, Fig. 15 on a chain 180 and are rotated by a belt 194 backed by springs 206. Belt and chain are driven from the shaft 108. The blanks pass over adjustable belt-driven grinding wheels which form a long taper, a point and remove the shoulder respectively. The blanks then drop on to plates 274 on an oscillated arm 272 which present them to chucks 44 on a turret 46. Rotary work - carrier. - On the turret 46, Fig. 15, are sixteen chucks 33, each comprising grooved sleeve 320 and a clamping disk 324. The blanks are clamped with light pressure by a spring 332 and the pressure is increased after leaving the receiving station by fixed pins 345 rotating a screwed sprocket 330. After work operations the pressure is released by pins 346. The clamps are turned 90 degrees by a cam engaging a plate 347 on the sleeve. The turret is intermittently rotated by a pawl 294, Fig. 4, on a cam retracted slide actuated by a spring 310 on the working stroke. The turret is locked by a cam actuated pin 312. Eye forming.-The turret positions the blank across a groove 362, Fig. 22, and a cam actuated head 364 is depressed to form an initial groove. A cam-actuated slide 376 with rounded recess 386 then moves transversely to convert the groove into an eye. Barbing by cutting.-A fixed cam engages the eye and rolls the blank 90 degrees and a blade on a pivoted carrier is'rocked to form the barb, Angular bending.-At station 44, Fig. 25, the blank is positioned under an anvil 436 and one tool 446 is swung about a shaft 458 and a second tool 472 about a shaft 478 to bend the hook about the anvil. The blank is then fed to station 56, where a pin 498 is rocked about a shaft 502 to slightly reverse bend the barb. Forging.-Flats are swaged at station 58 by pivoted tools 508, Fig. 26, on a carrier raised by a cam 526 to straddle the blanks, and then closed by a cam 530 to effect swaging. At station 60 mechanism similar to that shown in Fig. 26, slightly bends the hook relatively to the shank.
