[Class 86] Apparatus formixing or agitating continuously flowing material comprises a cylindrical chamber 35, Fig. 4, with an inlet 64 and an outlet 65 at opposite ends, and an agitator consisting of a rotary shaft 43 having projecting pins 44 and mounted eccentrically with and parallel to the axis of the cylinder 35. The overall diameter of the shaft 43 is at least one half of the diameter of the cylinder 35. Material to be mixed is passed through the inlet 64 and an additional ingredient may be introduced through a passage 67 and an annular passage 66 formed between the lower end of the shaft 43 and an annular flange 68 on the base of the chamber 35. Fluid from the passage 67 passes also through passages 70 to parts 71 distributed circumferentially and longitudinally of the shaft 43. A further ingredient may be delivered through a conduit 77 and ports 76 spaced longitudinally along a plate 75, Fig. 5, along the wall of a chamber 35. A temperature controlling medium may be passed through an annular chamber 38 surrounding the chamber 35, and the temperature may be recorded with the aid of thermocouples 78. The lower end of the shaft 43 is supported in a bearing 57 above which is a chamber 58 filled with lubricating oil forming a seal between the mixing chamber and the bearing 57 containing rings 59 spring pressed against flanges 61. Lubricating oil may also be applied through the passages 67 and 66. In an alternative construction the agitator and the mixing cylinder are mounted horizontally, and a further alternative construction is described in which the apparatus is mounted vertically.
