Abstract
590,300. Centrifugal compressors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 17, 1945, No. 9634. Convention date, April 21, 1944. [Class 110 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A centrifugal supercharging compressor has a vaned diffuser and the inlet ends of the vanes are angularly adjustable. The adjustment is effected through a control device responsive to the ratio of the static pressure rises in the impeller and the diffuser respectively and operates to maintain that ratio constant. In the example the desired ratio is unity. Bellows 21, 22 are subjected respectively to the impeller inlet pressure and the pressure between the impeller and diffuser. Bellows 23, 24 are subjected respectively to the last mentioned pressure and the pressure at the outlet of the diffuser. The equal armed lever 19 moves from its mid position when the pressure rise in the impeller differs from that in the diffuser. Such movement operates a piston valve 30 controlling the admission of pressure fluid to a cylinder 29 and movement of the piston 33, acting through a lever 17, adjusts the angular position of the inner parts 16 of the diffuser vanes in a way to bring the ratio of the pressure rises back to unity.
