Abstract
Rubbery copolymers of a major proportion of isobutylene and a minor proportion of a diolefine are plasticised by incorporation of 0.05-12.0 per cent by weight of an aryl mercaptan. Preferably, the copolymer used is prepared at a low temperature in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst dissolved in a low-freezing solvent. The mercaptan may be dissolved in a mineral oil and the solution stirred into the copolymer. Specified diolefines include butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, dimethylallyl. Aryl mercaptans listed include a - and b -naphthyl mercaptan and xylyl mercaptan.ALSO:Rubbery copolymers of a major proportion of isobutylene and a minor proportion of a diolefine are plasticized by incorporation of 0.05-12.0 per cent. by weight of an aryl mercaptan. Preferably the copolymer used is prepared at a low temperature in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst dissolved in a low-freezing solvent. The mercaptan may be dissolved in a mineral oil and the solution stirred into the copolymer. Specified diolefines include butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, dimethyl butadiene, myrcene and dimethylallyl. Aryl mercaptans listed include a - and b - naphthyl mercaptan and xylyl mercaptan. Examples are given.
