Abstract

A catalyst for the polymerization of alphaolefins or conjugated diolefins comprises a mixture of a compound of a metal of Groups IV, V, VI or VIIA, or VIII with the solid complex formed by reacting an alkali metal with aluminium triethyl etherate. The solid complex may be prepared by heating the alkali metal in a form providing a large surface area with the aluminium triethyl etherate in an inert diluent at 50-150 DEG C. Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 810,023 are referred to.ALSO:Alpha-olefins or conjugated diolefins are polymerized by contacting the olefin with a mixture of a compound of a metal of Groups IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa or VIII with the solid complex formed by reacting an alkali metal with aluminium triethyl etherate. Specified olefins are n-butene-1, n-pentene-1, n-hexene-1 and copolymers thereof, butadiene-1 : 3, isoprene and piperylene. Specifications 799,392, [Group III], 799,823 and 810,023 are referred to.
