Abstract

589,760. Helicopters. JACKSON, O. C. April 2, 1945, No. 8152. [Class 4] An aircraft, Fig. 1, comprising a lifting rotor 2 and an anti-torque rotor 8 has separate motors 1 and 7 respectively for driving the rotors. Should one motor fail the other can be connected, either manually or automatically, to drive both rotors. The halves 12, 13 of a clutch are driven respectively by the driving- trains of the two rotors and can be connected by a pilot-controlled arm 14 should one motor fail. Automatic connection means, shown in Fig. 3, comprises an epicyclic gear with members 17 and 18 driven by the larger and smaller engines respectively to maintain spider 19 normally non-rotating. Should one motor fail the spider 19 rotates and centrifugal means with pivotal arms 20 on the spider shaft opens a valve 22 to supply hydraulic pressure for operating control arm 14 to connect the halves 12, 13 of the clutch shown. In a modification, a fluid coupling between the two driving-trains automatically connects them on failure of one motor.
