Abstract
1484865 Shafts LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Nov 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 57311/73 Heading F2U [Also in Division B7] Apparatus for operating wing mounted flaps 11 on aircraft comprises for each flap a screw and nut mechanism 12 operated through a chain drive 15-17 by a spanwise-extending shaft run 20, 40 rotated by a central drive unit 36. Each shaft run comprises concentric shafts 21, 22 connected throughout the run by outer and inner universal joints with splined connections to the shafts the outermost extremities, at each wing tip, of the inner and outer shafts being joined together by splined connections (Fig. 3, not shown) arranged so as to be releasable. The drive unit 36 comprises an hydraulic motor controlled by a control valve, the control spool of which is actuated by a cam 55 operable in response to the difference between the position of a pilot's flap setting demand lever 56 and the position of an output shaft of the hydraulic motor. The connections between the outer and inner shafts ensures that should the outer shaft fracture at any point in its run the drive to the flaps will be connected beyond the fracture by the unbroken inner shaft. The outermost splined connections between the shafts have a limited amount of free rotational movement so arranged that a signal will be generated in response to such movement to provide a warning of shaft failure.
