Abstract

Triamino monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or their hydrates, of the kind in which the three amino groups are in the meta-position with respect to one another, are prepared by reacting the corresponding trinitro compound, dissolved in a saturated aliphatic ester solvent, with hydrogen, in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst. The reaction may be started at room temperature and allowed to warm up, and may be carried out at atmosphere or increased pressure. In examples: (1) 1 : 3 : 5-triaminobenzene, dissolved in ethyl acetate, with hydrogen in the presence of Raney nickel, filtering and cooling the filtrate; (2) 2 : 4 : 6-triaminotoluene is similarly prepared; (3) 2 : 4 : 6-triaminotoluene is similarly prepared using a mixture of ethyl and butyl acetates as the solvent; (4) 2 : 4 : 6-triaminotoluene is similarly prepared using diethyl carbonate containing 5 per cent of acetone as the solvent; (5) 2 : 4 : 6-triaminoethylbenzene is prepared as in (1) from trinitroethylbenzene. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use as solvents of an aliphatic alcohol containing up to four carbon atoms, an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene, or an aliphatic hydroxy ether, and refers also to the isolation of triamino compound formed as a salt, e.g. as the trihydrohalide, as the acyl derivative, e.g. the triacetyl derivative, or as the product obtained by diazotization.
