Abstract

Alkali and alkaline earth pantothenates are prepared by reacting an alkali or an alkaline earth salt of b -alanine with a : g -dihydroxy-b : b -dimethyl butyramide in a lower aliphatic alcoholic medium. The reaction may be carried out at room temperature or any elevated temperature up to the boiling point of the solvent used. In examples: (1) calcium b -alanate is reacted with d-a : g -dihydroxy-b : b -dimethyl butyramide at room temperature for four days in methanol solution to give pure crystalline d-calcium pantothenate. (2) As in example (1) except that the reaction is carried out under reflux, the boiling being continued for two hours. Alcohols mentioned which may be used as solvents include methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl and amyl.
