Abstract

589,446. Rotary engines. FARESO, J. A. Jan. 6, 1945, No. 591. [Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary engine of the type in which a pair of arcuate annular cylinders mounted on a rotary output member co-operate with a pair of pistons mounted on an oscillatory member which rotates with the output member and oscillates relatively thereto, the relative motion between the members is obtained by means of a connecting rod which is journalled centrally on a stationary crank-pin offset with respect to the axis of rotation of the output member and has two oppositely extending arms, each of which is slidably and rotatably connected to one of said members. The two arcuate cylinders 19 form part of a rotor 18 to which is secured or formed integrally therewith an output shaft 15 and a hollow shaft 24. The shafts are journalled in bearings 17 carried by a casing 11. The pistons 20 are carried by a member 21 which is journalled on a stationary shaft 22. A double-ended connecting rod 26 is journalled on an offset portion 25 of the shaft 22 and is slidably connected to trunnions 29, 30 which are pivotally connected to the member 21 and the rotor respectively. The shaft 22 can be pivotally adjusted about its own axis to control the position of the pistons and thus to advance or retard the ignition timing. A circular recess may be formed on the rotor to provide, in conjunction with a similar recess formed in the casing 11, an annular channel communicating with bores or passages in the rotor and the casing for the transfer of fuel to the cylinders. Cylinder heads 31 are provided with ignition means and inlet and exhaust valve gear. The rotor is provided with cooling ribs 32. A multicylinder engine may be constructed from a number of units of the type described. According to the Provisional Specification, the cylinders may be straight instead of curved, the pistons being connected to the rotor by link arms ; alternative means for obtaining the relative motion between the pistons and cylinders, involving the use of cams, are described.
