[Class 138 (ii)] The rotatable ironing cylinder 29 has a floating support in side frames 10, and is expanded by internal pressure into contact with a stationary heated shoe 22 which embraces at least 60 per cent. of its periphery. The cylinder is of rubber or a rubber substitute. It is mounted between end plates 43 secured together by tierods 51 having driving engagement with ribs 40 on the cylinder, the end plates being secured to sprockets 53 which are suspended on their driving chains 100, end thrust being taken by adjustable members 59. Compressed air from a pump 90 is supplied to the roller through a flexible tube 58, and a nipple 72 running air-tight in a bearing 64 on the frame. There may be several rollers arranged to act on the articles in succession. In the arrangement of two rollers shown, an endless belt 20 conveys the articles from an upper feed-in point and around the two rollers to a delivery table 38', and a transfer table 36 can be adjusted to take off articles after passing the first cylinder. The belt is taken over a pulley 19 on a main driving shaft 15, which is also connected by chain gearing with the driving sprockets 81 of the roller driving chains 100. In a modified form of cylinder, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) suction is applied to channels extending radially through the cylinder for the purpose of removing steam generated during ironing. These channels open into the bores in the ribs 40, which are sealed off from the cylinder interior, and connected with a suction pump 281.
