Abstract
<PICT:0588760/III/1> Catalytic apparatus suitable for the conversion of butylene to butadiene comprises a reaction chamber 1 within which is a mixing device 24 supplied with reaction gas by pipe 5 and with powdered catalyst from a reservoir 10 by way of a downflow standpipe 12 and an upflow standpipe 18, to which fluidizing gas is admitted by pipes 21, 20. The mixture passes through a <PICT:0588760/III/2> screen S into reaction space R and then descends centrifugal separators 27 surrounding the reaction space. Catalyst falls to the bottom of chamber 1 and is withdrawn and passed to regenerator 35 and then returned to reservoir 10. Gaseous reaction product passes up the tubes 29 into chamber 10 and then to cyclone separator 75 in which suspended catalyst is removed. Part of this is passed to the regenerator by pipe 80, and part traverses cooler 95 and is then injected by pipe 100 into the reaction products emerging from the reaction chamber to quench the reaction.
