Abstract

<PICT:0749222/III/1> Vapour phase reactions in the presence of a finely divided catalyst are carried out by fluidizing a bed of the catalyst in zone 1 by means of a diluent gas entering at 2, introducing reactant vapours at 3 and passing them, together with suspended catalyst particles, up through narrow reaction zone 6 to centrifugal separator 7 from which catalyst returns via line 8 to the fluidized bed; the ratio of catalyst to reactant vapours in the reaction zone varies according to the level of the fluidized bed in zone 1 which is regulated by withdrawing catalyst at 10 or by addition of catalyst from storage vessel 9 via line 11. A grid 4 is arranged between the top of the fluidized bed and the reactant vapour inlet. Reaction products leave at 16. For exothermic reactions, cool diluent gas is used, so that the catalyst is maintained below reaction temperature; for endothermic reactions, the diluent gas is preheated. The gas velocity may be 2-5 feet per second in zone 1 and 25-50 feet per second in zone 6. Dehydrogenation of naphthalenic hydrocarbons may be carried out, using a platinum on alumina catalyst, and hydrogen as the diluent gas. Oxidations, hydrogenations, and pyrolyses may also be performed, other specified diluent gases being flue gas, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water gas, methane, nitrogen, and steam.
