Abstract

588,703. Variable-contact resistances ; combinations of resistances. ROTAX, Ltd., and ARNOT, A. R. E. March 5, 1945, No. 5477. [Class 37] A potentiometer comprises a main resistance and a shorter subsidiary resistance connected to it, and two sets of alternate equally-spaced contacts arranged so that as one contact travels over the main resistance, one or two of the other contacts engage the subsidiary resistance. An annular former carries the main resistance a, connected in parallel with the subsidiary resistance c wound on a concentric segmental former. A hand- or motor-driven member h, supported by bearings, carries a contact i engaging the main resistance a and also carries two rings m, n, each of which has four equispaced contact arms j, k arranged so that each contact arm j carried by ring m lies midway between two contacts k carried by ring n. The length of the subsidiary resistance c is such that only one of each set of contacts j, k engages it at one time. The sets of contacts j, k are connected to slip-rings p, q respectively, and the main contact i is connected to the spindle of member h or to a slip-ring r. The poteniometer is intended for use in a follow-up system such as that described in Specification 588,704, [Group XXXVIII]. The main and subsidiary resistances may be connected in series.
