Abstract

Articles, e.g. sheets, of tetrafluoroethylene polymers and copolymers are made by forming a slurry of the finely-divided polymer in a liquid which wets the polymer and is readily vaporizable at atmospheric or reduced pressure at 327 DEG C., sedimenting the polymer therefrom in a layer, removing the supernatant liquid, e.g. by filtration under reduced pressure, allowing to stand until free from volatile liquid, e.g. by circulating warm air over it, and sintering at a temperature above 327 DEG C. The baked article may be quenched, e.g. in water, to improve its transparency. Non - porous articles are obtained by pressing the sediment at 50 to 10,000 pounds per square inch after removing the supernatant liquid. Suitable liquids are methyl and ethyl alcohols, acetone, acetic acid, ethyl acetate, hexane, tetrachloroethylene, ethyl ether, pinene, triethanolamine, dibutyl phthalate and mixtures of ethyl alcohol and water or ethyl acetate and hexane. Wetting agents such as sodium sulphosuccinate may be used with water. The process may be made continuous. The product may be moulded, drawn, pressed, hammered or machined by sawing, drilling, punching, shaping, milling or grinding. Copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene with ethylene or isobutylene are described.
