Abstract

The working fluid of a diffusion type vacuum pump comprises a polyphenyl ether having from three to seven phenyl groups linked by two to six oxygen atoms arranged in a chain. Separate isomers of the compounds may be used or mixtures of the ortho-, meta-, and para-isomers, and mixtures of polyphenyl ethers of different molecular weights may also be used. The ethers may be prepared by interlinking halogen derivatives and then eliminating the halogen, the last traces of which may be removed by treatment with sodium ethoxide in ethanol. Low boiling point impurities and oxidisable material are removed by prolonged moderate heating under vacuum or bubbling an inert gas or dry air at temperatures below 200 DEG C. through the ethers. For greater purification, the above steps are followed by slow distillation under high vacuum, rejecting the first 1% to 5% and last 1-5%. The boiling point range of the preferred ethers is 160 DEG C. to 300 DEG C. at 0.1 mm. pressure.
