587,827. Making nozzles and tubes. WACHTEL, L., and MODERN HARDMETALS, Ltd. Jan. 18, 1945, No. 1535. [Class 83 (ii)] A method of manufacturing nozzles and other seamless tubular bodies having abrasion and/or heat-resistant inner surfaces consists in coating a relatively soft core with refractory metal and subsequently removing the core by machining and, if necessary, by sandblasting, leaving a shell of the refractory metal. The refractory metal consists of a carbide of tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, tantalum, silicon, boron, vanadium or chromium or a mixture of such carbides with each other or with one of the metals of the group, iron, cobalt, nickel and manganese. The core comprises a rod or tube of easily machinable material such as iron or mild steel. A coating of the refractory metal may be applied to the core by means of welding rods of the refractory material, by spraying, followed by heating or by dipping the core into a pasty mixture of refractory powder and a binder followed by heat treatment. The core is then drilled and if necessary sandblasted. Making cased forms.-An outer covering of a machinable metal such as mild steel may be applied to the refractory coating by electric, oxy-acetylene or atomic hydrogen welding.
