Abstract

Water-insoluble, partially hydrolysed, polyvinyl esters or partial polyvinyl acetals are heated with a copper salt or complex at a temperature of not less than 250 DEG F., to improve resistance to methyl and ethyl alcohols, dioxane, transformer oils, water, acetone, toluene and ethylene dichloride. The complex may be formed in situ when coating a copper surface by adding ammonia or an amine to the resin composition. Copper compounds specified are copper acetate, 2-ethyl hexoate, sulphate, chloride and nitrate. Diethanolamine, triethanolamine, morpholine, monamylamine, dibenzoylamine, di-2-ethyl butylamine, aniline, cyclohexylamine, N.N1-dihydroxyethyl ethylene diamine, N.N1 - tetrahydroxyethyl ethylene diamine, hydroxyethyl diethylamine, propylene diamine, triethylene diamine, ethylene diamine, p-phenylenediamine, monoethanolamine, monoisopropanolamine, di-2-ethylhexenylamine, di-2-ethyl hexylamine and hexamethylene tetramine are specified amines. The resins may be obtained by hydrolysing polyvinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate or benzoate, or reacting polyvinyl alcohol with an aldehyde or simultaneously hydrolysing and acetalising an ester, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, propionaldehyde, valeraldehyde and hexaldehyde being specified. Gelation can be prevented by adding acetic acid, acetic anhydride, ammonia, amines, or ammonium acetate. Optional additions are methanol, methyl acetate, dioxane, cyclohexanone, diethylene glycol mono-butyl ether, triethylene glycol di-(2-ethyl hexoate), dibutyl sebacate and tricresyl phosphate. The compositions may be used to coat wires and paper or to bond paper, cloth, wood, metal and leather and then baking as above.
