Abstract

587,501. Lever mechanism. BENDIXWESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Nov. 27, 1944, No. 23651. Convention date, Feb. 17. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] The connection between a fluid-pressure actuator 28 and a throttle valve 6, includes a lever 32 which can pivot about either of two points 38, 39, and no matter whether the lever moves in the clockwise or anti-clockwise direction from its neutral position, the resultant movement imparted to the throttle valve through the medium of the spring-pressed link 40 will cause the throttle to open. As shown, the closed position of the throttle corresponds to the neutral position of lever 32 and to the neutral position of servo-piston 28. Should the compressed air supply fail, the loading spring 29 of the servopiston will force the latter downwards, the lever 32 will pivot about point 38 and the throttle will be opened slightly so that the engine can be started again although no air pressure will be available to open the throttle the amount requisite for starting. During normal running, air under pressure is supplied to the servopiston and the latter rises to cause lever 32 to pivot about point 39 and so open the throttle the amount required. An adjustable stop 46 limits the opening movement of the throttle on failure of the compressed air supply.
