Abstract

Leather scrap is wetted back and its pH adjusted to 5-6, is then drained and agitated in a revolving drum with an emulsion of plasticised polystyrene and polyvinyl acetate. Plasticisers specified are tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate and tributyl phosphate. In the examples, the plasticised resins in a mixture of xylene, alcohol, phenyl methyl carbinol, amyl acetate, naphthenic acid and calcium stearate are added to an aqueous dispersion of casein, starch, methyl cellulose and borax, wetted leather is added and agitated. The dough formed when the emulsion breaks may be rolled into sheets or moulded.
