Abstract

Ethylene containing acetylene is purified by spraying dimethyl or diethyl formamide into the top of a scrubbing tower operating at 20 to 200 lbs. per square inch pressure, the ethylene flowing countercurrent to the downwardly flowing formamide. Acetylene is removed by fractionation and the formamide recycled. Specifications 471,590, 497,643 and 578,584, [all in Group IV], are referred to.ALSO:Ethylene containing not more than 0.1 per cent by volume of acetylene is polymerized at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of oxygen or a per-compound. The acetylene may be removed by spraying dimethyl or diethyl formamide into the top of a scrubbing tower operating at 20 to 200 pounds per square inch pressure, the ethylene flowing counter-current to the downwardly flowing formamide. Acetylene is removed by fractionation and the formamide recycled. Alternatively, the gas may be mildly hydrogenated. Suitable per-compounds are hydrogen, diethyl, lauryl, urea, butyryl, benzoyl and tetrahydronaphthalene peroxides; persuccinic acid; alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and ammonium persulphates, perborates and percarbonates. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of water, benzene, iso-octane or chlorobenzene. Interpolymers may be formed with propylene, isobutylene, styrene; vinyl formate, acetate and isobutyrate; acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, crotonic and fumaric acids, their esters, acid halides, amides and anhydrides; vinyl and vinylidene chlorides; vinyl cyanide, N-vinyl amides, vinyl ethers, divinyl formal, divinyl butyral and methyl vinyl ketone.
