Abstract
Ethylene is prepared so that it does not contain more than 0.2 per cent of hydrogen and is polymerized alone or with other substances at elevated pressure and temperature in the presence of oxygen or a per-compound. The ethylene may be purified by compressing to 50 atmospheres, cooling to liquefy and distilling off the hydrogen, or by preheating ethanol at a rate between 20 DEG and 60 DEG C. per second in the range 175-300 DEG C. before dehydration at 300-500 DEG C. in the presence of catalysts such as phosphoric or sulphuric acids, phosphates of ammonium or organic amines or esters which may be deposited in a carrier such as graphite or coke. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of water, benzene, iso-octane and chlorobenzene. Suitable per-compounds are hydrogen, diethyl, lauryl, urea, butyryl, benzoyl or tetrahydronaphthalene peroxides, persuccinic acid and alkaline earth metal and ammonium persulphates, perborates and percarbonates. The ethylene may be interpolymerized with propylene, isobutylene, styrene, vinyl formate, acetate and isobutyrate, acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, crotonic and fumaric acids, their esters, acid halides, amides and anhydrides vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl cyanide, vinyl ethers, N-vinyl amides, methyl ethyl ketone and divinyl formal and butyral.
