Abstract
585,639. Rail joints. LEIGH, W. Nov. 3, 1944, No. 21553. [Class 104 (ii)] In a rail joint, the upper surfaces of the fishplates bear on either side of the rail webs and on the undersides of the rail heads, the lower inside portions of the fishplates bearing against the outside edges of the lower rail heads and the undersides of the fishplates bearing on the bases of the two adjacent rail chairs. For supporting bull-head rails, Fig. 3, two kinds of fishplates 1, 18 are shown, both of which may be such that they cause the rail to be held clear of the chair. The fishplates 1, 18 are recessed at 20 to bear against the outside edges of the lower rail heads 21, and have lips 22 which may extend into hollows 23 of the chairs, or may serve to hold keys 16. The fishplate 18 supports the rail head along its whole length, while the fishplate 1 has an upstanding portion 9 near the rail ends which bears against a surface 11 where the rail has been machined off to allow the portion 9 to be brought level with the running surface 10. Fishplates 34, Fig. 7, suitable for flat-bottom rails bear against sloping bases 38 and stops 33 of the rail chairs 29, vertical movement being prevented by spikes 43. The rail head may be machined off to allow the fishplate to be brought level with the running surface 36 as for bull head rails, and in both cases bolts may be provided on the level of line 27, Fig. 3, or line 40, Fig. 7.
