940,141. Correcting track surfaces. NORDBERG MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 1936/60. Heading B7N. In a method of removing depressions at the joints of a rail track made up of rails 22, 24 of standard length, a first car 10 positioned half a rail length from the joint to be corrected and a second car 12 positioned three quarters of a rail length from the joint, support a reference line 14 at a fixed height above the track surface and the joint is raised by the jack 16 until a sensing mechanism 18 indicates the correct height by reference to the line 14. The spacing between the cars and the jack is maintained either by bars or bogie vehicles and a tamping head (not shown) operates on the ballast to pack the joint to its new position. Where the joints are staggered, Fig. 2 (not shown), two reference lines attached to cars 10 and 12 define a reference plane to which the joint height is referred.
