Abstract

[Class 20 (i)] [Also in Groups XXV and XL] A flexible rod, e.g., for dowels or aerials comprises a core of solid or laminated or composite material over which a covering of one or more layers of uncured plastic material is wound the rod &c. being completed by curing the plastic material. An aerial rod may be made by consolidating a laminated sheet of fabric layers impregnated with synthetic resin, by heat and pressure, cutting the sheet into square-section strips, and passing the strips through a dowelling machine to produce cylindrical or tapered rods 12, Fig. 2. Copper wire 13 coated with resin cement, or flat strips of resin-coated copper or thin conductive sheet metal are then wound helically on the rods. Alternatively, thin metal sheets of a width equal to the length of the rods may be wound on the rods. Each core formed by a rod and metal winding is served with a coating of resin cement after which one or more layers, e.g., 14, 15 of resin-impregnated fabric tape or sheet material of width equal to the length of the rod are wound on the cemented core. The assembled core and covering are then placed in a mould and subjected to heat and pressure to cure the covering and to consolidate the rods.
