[Class 431 [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] A hollow rivet 12, Fig. 1, is formed with a plurality of internal longitudinal ribs 15 in the entering end portion of the shank partially obstructing the throat. The mandril head 20, Fig. 2, of the riveting tool is formed with correspondingly disposed grooves 24, so that, in one relative angular disposition of the mandril and rivet, the mandril head may be advanced unobstructedly through the hollow of the rivet, and then, on relative angular movement between the rivet and mandril head, and retractive movement of the head, the rivet may be upset. The distance from the roots of the projections in the rivet 12 to the underside of the head 13 should be not less than the thickness of the work 17, 18 to be riveted, and the inner ends 25 of the segments 23 which separate the grooves 24 of the head 20 are inclined to facilitate setting of the rivet by radial displacement of the ribs 15. Alternatively, this distance may be substantially greater and the inner ends of the segments made square to the axis so that the rivet shank in setting collapses into a two-ply flange.
