[Classes 19 and 138 (i)] An appliance for washing dishes comprises an eccentricallymounted brush rotated by an electric motor or compressed air through a flexible or rigid shaft, means for supplying hot water to the brush, and controllable means for supplying a detergent to the water when required. As shown, a bracket 21 mounted, for example, above a sink, supports an electric motor 20 and a heater 26 through which passes a water supply pipe 28 provided with a combined water valve and motor switch 27. The heater may be wired in the motor circuit to serve as an equalizing or variable resistance, so that the heating of the. water varies inversely with the speed of the motor. The brush 5, which has a hollow stock, is secured detachably on a hollow shaft 4 rotatable in a handle 1 of insulating material. The shaft is connected through a clutch 36 to a flexible cable 33 driven by the motor shaft 31, and a passage 6 in the handle is connected to a hose 34 leading to the pipe 28. The cable and hose are arranged side-by-side in a sheath 35, or the cable may run within the hose. The handle carries a lever 10 for compressing the hose 34 in order to shut off the supply of water to tho brush, and a fingerpiece for controlling the clutch 36. Also mounted on the shaft 4 within the passage 6 is a brush 12 adapted to scrape detergent from a stick 14 pressed towards it by a spring 15. The stick is removed by way of the cap 16 when the brush is to be used for rinsing. In a modification, the brush is supported beneath the motor by a rigid shaft, the connection being telescopic if desired, or embodying a universal joint. The brush is surrounded by a shield or splash hood embodying a mixing chamber connected to the hot water pipe 28 and also to a cold water pipe branching from the cock 27. Valves operable from inside the hood control the supply of hot and cold water to the mixing chamber, and the cock 27 may have two '' on " positions corresponding respectively to washing and rinsing conditions ; the latter requires a slower brush speed and less hot water. The detergent stick is controlled by a rack and plunger. In either construction, the bracket 21 may be pivoted to or slidable on the wall, and a plate rack may be associated with the heater 26.
