Abstract
Decorative materials and articles having a striated structure are made by superposing a number of sheets, each consisting of a mixture of comminuted methyl methacrylate polymer and monomeric methyl methacrylate and being coated on one or both sides with a solid layer of a material of different colour, shade or opacity, and solidifying the striated mass by polymerizing the monomeric methyl methacrylate. The methyl methacrylate polymer may be made by polymerizing methyl methacrylate by itself or with minor proportions of other polymerizable monomers such as styrene or butyl methacrylate. Dyes, pigments, fillers or plasticisers may be added to the polymer or to the mixture thereof with methyl methacrylate. The solid layer may consist of a film, fibres, or a powder. The polymerization is effected in a mould with provision for following up the shrinkage which occurs on polymerizing methyl methacrylate, e.g. as described in Specifications 450,305 and 576,034, [Group V], and may be effected by heat, under pressure, in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide. A mixture of comminuted polymethyl methacrylate and titanium dioxide pigment is made into a dough with monomeric methyl methacrylate which is rolled into a thin sheet and coloured on one side by rubbing with a cloth previously dipped in red pigment. Squares cut from the sheet are superposed in a mould, and the assembly is subjected to heat and pressure to polymerize the monomeric methyl methacrylate and cooled under pressure. The material is suitable for knife handles and imitation ivory.
