Abstract

584,120. Roller cages. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO. Sept. 12, 1945, No. 23465. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1944. [Class 12 (i)] A resilient rollerbearing cage has interconnected pockets which are spaced apart so that a portion of the cage itself accommodates angular movement of the rollers 6. The resilience of the cage restores both cage and rollers to their normal positions. The cage is formed from a resilient strip shaped to form pockets and comprises two end members 10, 11, side or bridge members 12 each of which has a portion extruding along part of a side of one pocket, a cross-over portion 13, and a portion along part of a side of an adjacent roller. The cross-over portions 13 are crimped to intercept with each other and are preferably welded together. The cage is sufficiently resilient and expansible to permit it and the rollers &c. to be snapped over the retaining rib 3 on a bearing member 1. The close-fitting of the rollers in the pockets assists the guiding action of the thrust rib 2, and minimises the tendency of the rollers to move angularly out of position. If the bearing has an odd number of rollers, the cage is made of a single piece of wire which begins and ends at the same cross-over, the two free ends of the wire being welded to the cross-over. For an even number of rollers, two strips are necessary. The distance of the cage from the centre line of the rollers determines whether the rollers are in contact along their side edges, or are spaced apart. The cage may consist of wire of circular, oval, square, or oblong cross-section, and is shown applied to taper and cylindrical rollers.
