Abstract
583,908. Upward current classifiers. PHIPPS, J. D. B. May 11, 1944, No. 9015. Addition to 553,604. [Class 82 (ii)] In a hindered settling classifier as described in Specification 566,158 the submerged body and the partly-submerged body are arranged to operate independently of one another over a part or the whole of their range of movement. As shown in Fig. 7 applied to a sand classifier, the submerged body 18 has a tubular extension 34 to which are fixed internal bearing rings 67 at the top and 66 at the bottom which latter engage a ring 65 fixed to n tube 36 supported by a channel framework 37 when the body 18 is in its lowest position. The tube 34 has also external rings 68 near the bottom and 69 at the top which engage ring 72 and bearing bush 71 of a tube 70 which carries a compensating float 40 and limits the travel of the body 18 and the float 40 relative to each other. At no load the body 18 and the float 40 will be in the lowest position and when dirty sand is fed into the classifier both will rise independently to equilibrium positions until the mud content of the dirty sand is such that the body 18 overtakes the float 40 from which time the two move together. The buoyancy of both the float 40 and the body 18 may be adjusted by admitting sand and water, or water, into them. In a modification, Fig. 16 (not shown), both bodies move independently of one another all the time. In either modification a second pump may be employed to draw off particles of a predetermined size by means of a suction pipe 79, Fig. 8, passing into the parallel portion 76 of the sand cone through a gland 80 and capable of being adjusted so that particles may be drawn from any point between the centre and circumference of the column of liquid by a hand wheel 83 and shaft 81. In a further modification, Fig. 17 (not shown), the sand cone is replaced by a volute having its base in the form of a cone to prevent the building-up of a cone of sand.
